Selection of Electronic Resources
Introduction
Electronic resources include databases, ejournals and other digital files
which The Library has either licensed for the use of its readers or established
links to facilitate access. In a few cases, The Library has obtained permanent
rights of access, but for the most part, these resources are leased from
year to year and do not constitute additions to the collections. Licensed
material may be used for purposes of research, education and other non-commercial
uses as is consistent with the Fair Use provision of US and international
law.
Selection Criteria
The electronic resources listed on this site are selected to support the
subject and research interests of users of the The New York Public Library.
They are evaluated by professional staff on criteria similar to those used
for adding new materials to its print collections. Electronic resources
are judged by the relevancy of the content to the informational and research
interests of Library users; the accuracy, integrity and currency of data;
the scope of subject coverage; continued access to archival backfiles and
the reputation of the information supplier.
Additionally, electronic resources are evaluated by their ease of use,
search capabilities and output options. All electronic resources supported
by The New York Public Library must meet accepted technical standards and
best practices for operation and equipment usage.
The New York Public Library also provides access to electronic resources
which are free web resources. The Library attempts to keep such links up-to-date
but do not archive the content or guarantee permanent access.
