NYPL CollectionsThe New York Public Library operates 86 circulating libraries in three boroughs and four major research facilities in Manhattan (the Humanities and Social Sciences Library; The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts; the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture; and the Science, Industry and Business Library). You will find over 50 million items in the Library's collections. Of these, about 20 million are books. Remaining items include manuscripts, letters, audio recordings, films and videos, maps, sheet music and orchestral parts, pictures, materials for the blind, prints, photographs, clipppings and more. Use the catalog or AMAT to search most (but not all) of the Library's collections. A small percentage of The Research Libraries' holdings are still only found in the retrospective catalogs of the various subject and language divisions. We offer 400 subscription databases for cardholders, downloadable ebooks, and a digital gallery of over 480,000 images digitized from primary sources and printed rarities in the collections of The New York Public Library, including illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, vintage posters, rare prints and photographs, illustrated books, printed ephemera, and more. You do not need a library card to enter any of our buildings, although a card of admission is required to view some of our special collections.
