Kingsbridge Branch Information

Branch History

Set against the backdrop of a vibrant multi-ethnic community in the Northwest Bronx, the Kingsbridge Branch of The New York Public Library has been an integral part of its neighborhood since 1905. Originally located on Kingsbridge Avenue, the branch has since shifted to its current home on West 231st Street. Today the library features two floors with large collections for adults, young adults, and children. There is also an extensive reference collection which includes periodicals, newspapers, and electronic resources.

Collections & Services

  • Book collections for adults, young adults, and children available for borrowing and use in the library
  • Assistive Technology:
    • Closed-Circuit Television Enlarger (CCTV) - enlarges printed material 45-60 times
    • Personal Reading Machine - scans printed text and reads aloud in synthetic speech
    • Computer screen magnification software
  • Community Information Service Collection
  • Personal computers and software for free public use by appointment
  • Internet access for free public use by appointment
  • CLASP, Connecting Libraries and Schools Project: a library-school partnership that links schools serving students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Programs

  • Special events for adults including films, poetry readings, lectures, book discussion groups, and stamp club
  • Films, story hours, poetry workshops, and other programs for children and teenagers
  • English Classes for Speakers of Other Languages held during fall, winter, and spring
  • Click-On computer classes offered include Mouse Basics and Internet Basics
  • Class visits by appointment
