Registration &
Attendance

Are the classes free?
Yes, all of our classes are free.

Do I need identification or a library card to sign up?
No. You do not need to bring identification or a library card in order to sign up for a class. We will ask your name and phone number so we can contact you in case of an emergency or cancellation.

When do I register for classes?
Most locations require pre-registration. Our calendar lists our classes and details for registration at each location.

How do I register for classes?
At many locations you can phone the library branch directly or drop by to register.

At the Mid Manhattan Library you must register online.

What if I cannot make it to in-person registration?
You can call the branch or drop by later in the day to see if there are any slots left.

Can I send someone else to register for me?
Yes.

How do I register online?
Here are the instructions to register online.

Can I be a standby?
Yes. If there are slots available or if a registered student is late or fails to show up, standbys are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Different locations have different grace periods for late students. Please call your location for more information.

What if I sign-up for a class and later decide I can't make it?
Please phone the branch where you signed up and let them know you are not able to attend.

Can I attend the 2nd session of a class if I didn't attend the 1st session.
No. Students are expected to attend all sessions. An instructor can make an exception to this.

Can I be late to a class?
Classes start on time and we expect our students to make every effort to arrive prior to the start of class. Registered latecomers seats will be given to standbys.

Are there pre-requisites for a class?
Some classes have pre-requisites. Speak with a staff member to see if your computing experience fulfills the pre-requisite.

How many classes can I take each month?
Due to high demand, some locations must limit enrollment to one or two classes per month. Locations that are most likely to limit enrollment are the 58th Street Branch Library, the Bronx Library Center, and the Morningside Heights Branch Library.

Can I take the same class more than once?
Yes. There is only so much we can teach in a class and we strongly encourage students to come in and practice on their own.

Can I take classes at more than one location?
Yes.

Can children or teenagers take Click on classes?
Yes. We offer classes especially for children and young adults. We discourage children and young adults from taking our regular classes, which are especially designed for adult learners. We find that children and teenagers become frustrated with the pacing of classes not designed especially for their age groups.

Class Locations & Schedules

Where are the classes offered?
We offer classes in approximately 20 locations throughout the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island.

Why isn't this class offered at this location?
Due to demand and instructor expertise, not all locations are able to offer all classes.

Are one-on-one classes given?
No. The Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library offers individualized instruction for the populations they serve. If you think you are eligible for this service, you can call (212) 206-5400 for more information.

Are there other locations that offer computer classes?
Yes. There are several other library locations that offer classes on a regular basis.

When is the new schedule of classes going to be posted?
The new schedule of classes for the upcoming month is generally posted online by the last week of the previous month.

Can you mail or fax me the printed version of the upcoming schedule?
Click on does not maintain a mailing or faxing list. You can access the online calendar here.

Do you offer classes in Brooklyn or Queens?
No. Click on @ the library computer classes are offered in the three boroughs that the New York Public Library serves - the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island.

Class Content & Curriculum

Are classes offered in Spanish or other languages?
We offer a limited number of classes in Spanish and Chinese. Check the calendar of classes on this website for specific times and dates.

Is there a curriculum?
Instructors offer handouts for a majority of our classes, and most classes have a standardized curriculum that the instructors follow.

Do you offer classes in Filemaker, MS Outlook, MS Publisher, Quark, Dreamweaver, Peoplesoft, C ++, Java, etc?
No. We are unable to offer classes in specific software, except the very basics of the MS Office (ex. Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Some locations offer a limited number of very introductory Photoshop Elements and other graphics classes. Several other organizations and non-profits offer low cost or free computer classes. One of these other organizations may offer the classes for which you are looking. For a listing of these organizations please visit this website.

What is the name of the instructor?
The best way to learn the name of the instructor is by asking the instructor at the beginning of the class. Often an instructor has not been assigned by the time of registration, or there are last minute instructor changes.

What classes are offered at the Celeste Bartos Education Center (SouthCourt) in the Humanities and Social Sciences Library?
At SouthCourt, we offer classes that emphasize HSSL's library collections. An updated listing can be found here.

What classes are offered in the Elizabeth and Felix Rohatyn Electronic Information Center at the Science, Industry, and Business Library?
At the EIC, we offer classes that emphasize SIBL's library collections. An updated listing can be found here.

Can I bring my laptop, and use it during the class, so I can learn using my own computer?
This is dealt with on a case by case basis. Most of the training centers are not designed to accommodate additional computers/laptops. Staff assisting a person using their own personal laptop would be extremely limited.

Do you offer classes for Macs (Apple)?
No. However, several other organizations and non-profits offer low cost or free computer classes. One of these other organizations may offer the class you're looking for. Here is a listing of these organizations.

We do not currently partner with organizations that give out computers for free. The Library does partner with PerScholas, a non-profit organization that sells low cost refurbished computers. 1-800-877-4068.

Other FAQs

Are your instructors volunteers, or paid staff, and can I be an instructor?
Our instructors are a part of our staff. People who are interested in working for the NYPL should visit our website for job openings.

Who pays for these classes? Is someone funding this?
Currently, these classes are offered as a regular part of the Library's services and are city funded.
