Books, Videos, CD-ROMs, DVDs and Audiocassettes to Borrow

On the street level of the Science, Industry and Business Library (SIBL) are over 50,000 popular science and business titles, available for borrowing in a variety of formats including books, videos, audiocassettes, CD-ROMs and DVDs. You can register for a free borrower's card at SIBL.

Science and applied science subjects include: astronomy, biography, biology, botany, chemistry, computers, earth sciences, engineering, environmental sciences, general science, mathematics, natural history, nature, physics, technology and zoology.

Business subjects include: biography, business, commerce, economics, finance, industry, insurance, labor, management, marketing, and transportation. Also included are popular treatments of commercial law and intellectual property.

The same subjects are also covered in greater depth in SIBL's research collections on the Lower Level.

Loan periods for circulating materials at SIBL are 3 weeks for books and audiocassettes, 1 week for videos, CD-ROMs and DVDs. Fines are charged for overdue materials: 25 cents per day for overdue books and audiocassettes; 1 dollar per day for overdue videos, CD-ROMs and DVDs.

Browsing Collection of Journals and Magazines

Current issues of many science and business journals plus several newspapers are available on open shelves for quick browsing and use in the library. Also included are a number of titles of general interest. Back issues of journal titles are available on the lower level.

Computers For The Internet And SIBL's Networked Databases A large number of networked computer workstations offer access to the Internet and to many of SIBL's networked databases.

How to find what you're looking for

View of the interior, Reading RoomShelf Arrangement: The materials on the street level are arranged numerically by subject using the Dewey Decimal system. Books and videos are shelved together on the same shelves. The CD-ROMs, DVDs and audiocassettes are located in separate sections.

LEO - The Branch Libraries Catalog: SIBL's circulating materials are listed in LEO, the catalog of The Branch Libraries. LEO is available in the library and also over the Internet at www.nypl.org. With LEO you can place holds on items owned by any NYPL branch library, renew books and also review your patron information.

We can hold a book for you to borrow – Call us at 212-592-7069 during open hours and if the book is on the shelf we can hold it for you to pick up, or we can send it to the branch of your choice in Manhattan, the Bronx or Staten Island.

To renew library materials by phone call LEOLine: 212-262-7444 – You can use LEOLine 24 hours a day to renew library materials, find out what items you have on loan, cancel holds, find out your total fines. Have your library card ready when you call.

Some of the most popular materials in SIBL's circulating collections are – Computer books, nature videos, job and management skills, home building and repair.

For a treasure trove of New York City day-to-day "survival" information try the Community Information Service – With both online resources and a collection of books and pamphlets in every branch, Community Information includes resources on education, consumer information, housing, government, senior citizens, social and health services, etc. The Directory of Community Services/Directorio de Servicios para la Cumunidad is available online in both English and Spanish.
