Commercial service that combines the image resources of several renowned stock houses.  Preview of images available for free.  Most images prominently watermarked to protect copyrights.

AltaVista -- Image Search
Another search engine for accessing images from the Web.  Also displays results from some commercial image banks.  Useful features include the ability to limit results to graphic or photographic material.

Large image resource with strong historical content.  Combines the holding of two powerhouses in the stock imagery business: Hulton-Getty and Archive Photos.

Database of over 7000 advertisements printed in U. S. and Canadian periodicals between 1911 and 1955.  Searchable by topic and keyword.  Excellent resource for visualizing American society and culture in the periods covered.
