The Bronx on the Web: Government

The Bronx Flag

The Bronx Flag contains the same three horizontal stripes as the colonial Dutch flag.

In the center, and extending into the orange stripe above and the blue stripe below, there is the Bronck family crest encircled by a laurel wreath. The laurel denotes honor and fame.

The crest in the center of the laurel wreath bears an eagle on a hemisphere facing eastward with its wings displayed. This represents the hope of the New World while not forgetting the Old.

Below this is a three-pointed shield on which is the face of the sun with rays displayed rising from the sea. This signifies the coming of peace and liberty and the importance of commerce. Below the shield is a ribbon on which is printed the Latin motto, "NE CEDE MALIS," meaning "Yield not to evil," a perfect civic slogan.
