Love history and literature? Original archival documents? Are you interested in new ways to incorporate primary source materials into your lesson plans?

NYPL is looking for you!

We are looking for innovative teachers at the middle and high school level for a one-week collaborative summer exploration and teacher training based at The New York Public Library's flagship Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue.

The Education Innovation @ NYPL Summer Institute will take place July 28 - August 1 (Monday-Friday 9:30 a.m.- 4 p.m).

Lunch will be provided each day.

Institute participants will:

  • Learn about NYPL's world-class circulating and research collections. This summer we are focusing on collections involving the history and literature of: (1) Colonial America and the American Revolution; (2) The Civil War/Emancipation Proclamation; (3) World War I; (4) New York, Then and Now: Immigration and New York City Over Time
  • Learn best practices for integrating primary source documents into your classroom, and create and annotate resource lists for yourself and other teachers (we are looking to create exemplar resource lists for use in most classrooms.) Last year’s materials were seen by over 12,000 people in New York and globally.
  • Learn about the Library's existing curation tools for primary sources including our digital collections (with over 800,000 images), and new and dynamic ways we are creating for students to experience primary sources (have you seen our Building Inspector game - powered by citizen cartographers? or our crowdsourced What's On the Menu project?)
  • Teachers will receive up to 30 professional development credits, issued through the NYC Department of Education Office of Library Services.

We hope the experience will lead to an ongoing relationship with the New York Public Library as we continue to provide a wide-ranging array of services to teachers as their needs evolve.

Applications are due: *deadline extended until Wednesday July 2nd at 5pm*

Successful candidates will be notified by Monday July 7th.
