Here's February, and you already knew it was coming — not because of your calendar, but because of all the red and pink Valentine's Day things you've been seeing in all the stores!

Why don't you make New Dorp Library your Valentine this year? Curl up with a book in one of our comfy chairs or take a movie home to enjoy a night in. Feeling active? Spend some time with the ones you love and attend one of our programs! We've got a little something for everyone!

We won't send you flowers or candy, but we will fill your arms with free books, movies, and programs!

Special Program:
"Take Your Child to the Library Day!"
Saturday, February 1st, 10:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
For children and caregivers.
You've heard of "Take Your Child to Work Day", but what about "Take Your Child to the Library Day"?

Special activities:
All day - coloring sheets/crayons available,
2 p.m. Film "Ice Age - Continental Drift",
3:30 p.m. Stories and Songs
No registration. Free of charge.

For Children

Picture Book Time/Reading Aloud
For ages 3 years and up.
Enjoy hearing books read aloud, finger plays, action rhymes and coloring.
Wednesdays, at 4 p.m.
February 5, 12, 19 & 26

Preschool Program
For ages 2.5 to 5 years and their caregiver.
Tuesday, February 4, at 3:30 p.m.
Enjoy books, finger plays, action rhymes, and a simple craft.

"Toddler Rhyme Time"
For ages 1.5 – 2.5 years and their caregiver.
Friday, February 7, at 10:30 a.m.
Bring your toddler to an interactive program featuring books, finger rhymes and songs.

Valentine’s Day Craft
For ages 4 years and up.
Thursday, February 13, at 4 p.m.
Create a craft to keep or give as a gift.
Preregistration is needed starting 1 week before.

Baby Rhyme Time
For ages birth to 1.5 years and caregiver
Friday, February 21, at 10:30 a.m.
Bring your baby to an interactive program with books, gentle movement and songs.

Free - Family Movies!
Free family movies will be shown on some Saturdays, at 2 p.m..
2/1, "Ice Age: Continental Drift", 2/8, "Escape from Planet Earth" and 2/15, "Pete’s Dragon".
Children may take home a free coloring sheet of the movie character.

Free Math & Reading Tutoring
Free math tutoring for children Pre-K to 8th grade
Free reading tutoring for children Pre-K to 3rd grade
Presented by Staten Island Technical volunteers and Stuyvesant High School volunteers.
Tuesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. - Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., & 2 p.m. to 4.
Space is limited. Register in person. Children receive about 20 minutes tutoring each.

For Teens


Teen Café Remixed
February 2/3, 2/10, 2/24 2 - 4 p.m.
Come join us for fun in the community room. Play your favorite games on the PS3 and the Wii. Come hang out with your friends! You can bring your snacks, soda, coffee, homework, iPod. Check out a laptop and browse the internet! For ages 12-18.

Teen Club
February 2/5, 2/12, 2/26 2 – 4 p.m. Your two favorite programs – Teen Art & Anime Club have combined !! Talk Anime and Draw Manga or Talk Manga and don’t draw Anime. It’s up to you. For ages 12 to 18.

 

Teen Advisory Group (TAG)
February 2/14
2 – 4 p.m.
Join our Teen Advisory Group and get hands on experience volunteering for the Library.
Earn Community Service hours by attending our monthly meetings and giving us your input! What's happening in your world? What’s the hottest book, movie, or cd right now? What programs does the library need? This is a great way to meet new friends and really get involved in what goes on here at the New Dorp Library. For ages 12-18.

Bilingual Knitting and Crochet Club (English & Español)
Mondays, February 3 & 10, 2014 at 4:30-5:30 p.m.
Participants must supply their own yarn, needles, and hooks.

Stay Well Exercise Program
Tuesdays, February 4, 11, 18 & 25, 2014 at 1 p.m.-2 p.m.
The Stay Well exercise program is geared for all seniors, ranging from the fit to those with disabilities. The curriculum includes aerobic exercises as well as routines designed to enhance balance, build muscle strength and aid in the performance of the tasks associated with daily living. Classes end with stress reduction exercises. Classes normally run 40 - 50 minutes and are held once a week.

Are you having trouble with your email? Don’t know how to cut and paste? Curious about Twitter? Bring your technology questions and get one-on-one assistance. Registration begins on January 29, 2014.

Zumba Workout
Thursdays, February 6 & 20, 2014 at 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.
Zumba is a fusion of Latin & international music combined with dance fitness moves. Come in sneakers and comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle.

World Cares Center (WCC) is a nonprofit that offers disaster preparedness and response trainings, including methods to prevent household disasters as well as ways to keep yourself and your family safe during widespread disasters.

Microsoft Word for Beginners
February 7, 2014, 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Learn the basic features of Microsoft Word 2010, a word processing program you can use to create documents. Topics include entering and editing text, saving files, and formatting. Registration begins on January 31, 2014.

American Mah Jongg
Friday, February 14 & 28, 2014 at 2:30-4 p.m.
Join other American Mah Jongg enthusiasts for an afternoon of enjoyable play. If you have a Mah Jongg set and a Mah Jongg Card, please bring them. All levels welcome.

Get Your Resume Right

This hands-on class will guide you through formatting your resume in Microsoft Word. Please bring a written draft of your resume and a USB drive to save and/or print your resume. Registration begins on February 21, 2014.
