Free Programs at New Dorp Library: June 2013

The school year is coming to an end and the temperatures are rising! You could spend your summer at the beach showing off that new swimsuit you searched for all winter... or you could spend some time at your local library! We've got plenty of things for you to do while your on summer vacation! You could join in on the Summer Reading fun at summerreading.org! Escape the hot weather inside our air conditioned buildings and read a great book or attend a program! Things will be getting wild this month when the we get a visit from some awesome night animals! Summer Reading kick off parties will be a blast! You could even catch a movie in the library!

So don't be a June bug this summer and hide under a rock... Come in to New Dorp Library and have some fun!

For Children:

Picture Book Time
For ages 3 and up
Enjoy hearing books read aloud, finger plays, action rhymes and coloring.
Wednesdays at 4 p.m. June 5, 12, 19, & 26
No preregistration is needed.

Toddler Rhyme Time
For ages 18 – 30 months (1 ½ - 2 ½ years) and caregiver
Bring your toddler to an interactive program featuring books, rhymes, and songs.
Friday, June 7, at 10:30 a.m.
Preregistration is required and will start 1 week before (5/31).

Magic Show - Children’s Summer Reading Program “Kick-Off”
Thursday, June 13th
Enjoy a magic show, and learn about & join our Summer Reading Program.
Magic show will start at 4 p.m., for ages 4 & up.
The Summer Reading Program will be for ages birth – 12 years, and ongoing through August .

End of School Craft
For ages 5 to 12 years
Friday, June 14th at 4 p.m.
Celebrate the end of school, with a creative, fun craft!
Preregistration is required, starting 1 week before (6/7).

Preschool Program
For ages 2 ½ - 5 years and caregiver
Enjoy books, finger plays, action rhymes and coloring.
Wednesday, June 19, at 11 a.m.
Preregistration is required and will start 1 week before (6/12).

Family Movies
Free family movies for all ages. Shown on a Saturday, at 2 p.m.
June 22 – “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” & June 29 – “My Friend Bernard”
Get a coloring sheet too!

Free - Math & Reading Tutoring:
Math tutoring: for children Pre-K to 8th grade
Reading tutoring: for children Pre-K to 3rd grade.
Presented by Staten Island Technical volunteers and Stuyvesant High School volunteers
Tuesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., & 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Space is limited. Register in person that day.

For Teens:

Make at NYPL: 3D Printing and Design
June 6th
2:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Create your world! Learn how to build objects in 3D design software, and build them with the MakerBot Replicator. Use your imagination and math skills. For ages 12 to 18 years old.

Night Creatures
June 6/11
4 - 5 p.m.
Are you ready to meet things that go bump in the night? Bats, sloths, owls and more move around in the dark, and this is your chance to see them in daylight. Join Rob Mies as he talks about the nocturnal critters.
ALL AGES :)

Teen Café Remixed
June 6/3, 6/10, 6/17
2 - 4 p.m.
Come join us for fun in the community room. Play your favorite games on the PS3 and the Wii. Come hang out with your friends! You can bring your snacks, soda, coffee, homework, iPod. Check out a laptop and browse the internet! For ages 12-18.

Teen Club
June 6/5,6/12
2 – 4 p.m.
Your two favorite programs – Teen Art & Anime Club have combined !! Talk Anime and Draw Manga or Talk Manga and don’t draw Anime. It’s up to you. For ages 12 to 18.

Teen Advisory Group (TAG)
June 6/1
2 – 4 p.m.
Join our Teen Advisory Group and get hands on experience volunteering for the Library.
Earn Community Service hours by attending our monthly meetings and giving us your input! What's happening in your world? What’s the hottest book, movie, or CD right now? What programs does the library need? This is a great way to meet new friends and really get involved in what goes on here at the New Dorp Library. For ages 12-18.

For Adults:

Mah Jongg for Adults
Friday, June 7 and 28, 2013 at 2:30-4 p.m.
American Mah Jongg
Join other American Mah Jongg enthusiasts for an afternoon of enjoyable play. If you have a Mah Jongg set and a Mah Jongg card, please bring them. All levels welcome.

Wireless Wednesdays
Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Wireless Wednesday is laptop tutoring. Registration starts one week before the class.

Zumba Workout
Thursdays, June 13 and 27, 2013 at 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.
Zumba is a fusion of Latin & international music combined with dance fitness moves. Come in sneakers and comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle.

Job Recruitment with Workforce 1
