New Dorp Library
Submitted by Leo's Friend on November 28, 2012 at 3:18 PM.
The New Dorp Library is a refuge. In my opinion this branch is the true flagship of the borough of Staten Island, being more easily accessible in its central location than the St. George facility is on the north shore. The staff is always friendly and the room has a modern feel to it, (especially after the renovation).
In tough times, the lost souls who are unemployed, (and now homeless, due to Hurricane Sandy), depend on the New York Public Library to be a lifeline, which it truly is.
The reason I stay in New York City, (and Staten Island), is because of the gift of free knowledge. With a few clicks of a mouse I can gain access to practically any book in print, (and many that are not, but still available at the NYPL). The catalog of film and music is unbeatable. (My wife and myself have a special affinity for British detective shows).
I hope the budget cutters leave the library alone because the real people out here really need this place. There are things that are as important as food and shelter, and for many people who can't afford too much beyond that, the library is a window to the world. All you need is your library card.
