I'm currently working my way through Borderlands 2 as an assassin who almost exclusively uses Maliwan weapons. It's a lot of fun and (as most reviews have indicated) a nice improvement on the first game. The wacky humor, mindblowing variety of guns, and drop-in, drop-out cooperative play are all back again, but with a tighter story and pacing.
I recently downloaded Stacking from XBLA and the art direction is fantastic (particularly in the miniature portraits you collect). Tim Schafer and Double Fine's sense of humor also really shine through the narrative, which manages to reference The Great Depression, child labor, and the birth of cinema without seeming heavy-handed.
Finally, our NYPLarcade Horror Games series kicks off this Monday. I've been playing back through Amnesia: The Dark Descent and I can't wait to see if it is just as scary projected on a 10' screen and sitting in a room full of other people.
What games are you playing?

Star Trek Online

I've started playing Star Trek Online on my computer, which is completely free (unless you want to add some fancy options to it). I recently just played a Ben 10 game on Xbox, and I think I'm going to break down and get the add for Crimson Alliance soon and play the extra levels.
I'm really excited to play Borderlands 2 at some point. That character with the weapons - is it Zero? - I think he's going to be my favorite, but the ad also makes the girl character - I think it's Maya? - seem like a fun choice, too. Look like a fun game :)

I'm playing as Zero right now and his ridiculous haikus in the middle of battle are pretty entertaining: "And I disappear; / A ghost amidst the combat, / Preparing to strike." I played the first game as a siren (Maya) and it definitely looks like they've made that skill tree more interesting and effective this time around, but I have yet to try it.
I'll have to check out Star Trek Online if I ever drop my self-imposed ban on MMO's. ;)
Fallout 3

I recently started playing Fallout 3 (I tend to be behind the curve, so I can buy games and video cards cheap--exclusively a PC gamer).
It's pretty good, if you never tried it. There was at least one classic moment so far. In the beginning, your "lone wanderer" character escapes from a Vault, basically a fancy fallout shelter. Early in the game, but after you've gotten used to the outside world a little bit (let's see if I can avoid giving too much away), you end up in an imitation Vault. It's pretty creepy, one of those points at which your reactions to the game are more real than virtual.
The other thing I can't stop thinking about is "fantasy" v. "sci-fi." Lots of what we call science fiction is really fantasy, isn't it?

Fallout 3 is great! I love when games throw in a metafictional (game-within-a-game) element. It definitely can change the player's frame of reference by breaking the fourth wall.
Rod Serling (of The Twilight Zone) has a pretty good quote about the subtle difference between the two genres: "Fantasy is the impossible made probable. Science Fiction is the improbable made possible."
