Stuff for the Teen Age, Popular Music

Kingsbridge Teens Recommend: Favorite Music from 2010

After discussing 2010's music CD releases with the members of the Kingsbridge Library's Teen Advisory Group, I learned a few things about popular music. I learned that just because a performer was popular with teens all over the country didn't mean that this performer was popular with MY teens (like Taylor Swift, for example). I learned how to pronounce Ke$ha's name correctly (excuse me for not knowing how to pronounce something with a DOLLAR SIGN in it!)  I learned that many teens are of the opinion that "only old people buy music from amazon.com," at which point I told them to get off of my lawn while cursing my lumbago. And I learned that a large portion of last year's CD releases were made up of soundtrack albums from the TV show Glee.  But you're not going to see any of those albums on this list, because the kids in this year's Teen Advisory Group like Glee about as much as they like Taylor Swift. Go figure.

Anyway, here's a whole bunch of music that they DID enjoy:

Loud by Rihanna
Lots of people can relate to her songs.  And we LOVE "What's My Name!"

Teenage Dream by Katy Perry
We love "Teenage Dream," even if it has an awkward video.  We also love "Firework," and the music video (about being yourself) rocks, too!

Need You Now by Lady Antebellum
As much as I hate to admit it, I like this music!  At first I thought it was annoying, but then I got used to it.  We LOVE the "Need You Now" song!

Doo-Wops & Hooligans by Bruno Mars
"Grenade" is a great song, but different from what he usually does.  It all relates to love!

Raymond v. Raymond by Usher
He had a BUNCH of hits this year!  Nice improvement!  Oh, and he's a good dancer, too!

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West
That's such a great album title!  Kanye's music is fantastic!

Animal by Ke$ha
Her music is really catchy, but when it gets stuck in your head it's annoying.  She uses Auto-Tune like Lil' Wayne—she shouldn't be doing all that stuff to her voice!

My World 2.0 by Justin Bieber
He's CUTE!!!  It's awkward that he has a girl voice, but the songs are still good!

Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys by My Chemical Romance
Their songs are good and awesome and catchy!

Recovery by Eminem
Eminem is just awesome!  He just keeps getting better and better!

Thank Me Later by Drake
Good dance songs!  His songs are awesome, and they make me laugh!

Pink Friday by Nicki Minaj
Different and unique music—we love this fearless female rapper!

Selfish Machines by Pierce the Veil
A great variety of songs, from depressing to techno to rock!

your blog

It was nice to see your name pop up and that you are still doing a lot with teens at Kingsbridge library. I worked with you for a few years from MS 37- so it was good to see you still going strong. I came across your blog as am trying to gather the best book titles for my school to order for urban teens at Coalition High School.
