Literacy in the Arts: Family Albums
We brought in photos from our family album. We observed the different attributes of a photo, such as setting, background, light and subject. We wrote about the family photo and shared it with the class. Photography lets us remember the good moments and brings us wonderful memories!

Adult Literacy at NYPL -expression with camera, pen,and computer

Adult Literacy in a community library setting integrates the expressive tools of language with the personal voice of experience through projects such as this photography and writing workshop series. This multimedia approach motivates new adult readers and writers to explore their creativity through visual connections that lead to improved literacy and technological awareness. The small group workshop model brings a level of support and engagement that would be difficult to capture in a more traditional classroom setting.
Congratulations to the NYPL staff, volunteer tutors, and of course the adult students who participate in this exciting program.

Student excitement!
Submitted on April 18, 2010 at 1:12 PM.
Our Photography Workshop students are thrilled to have their own digital cameras to explore their environment. In an early workshop, they shot photos of their own familiar communities, people they knew and their own neighborhoods. In recent weeks they were sent off to new neighborhoods, to discover new cultures, and to get there on their own, thus learning how to read a subway map along the way! We are excited to see their discoveries of new people and communities in future weeks!
How lucky we are to be able to encourage their visual literacy skills, right alongside their reading and writing skills!!
