The Dance Oral History Channel: Molissa Fenley Interview, Excerpt

The Interview with Molissa Fenley, conducted by Ann Murphy, was audio recorded on June 28 and 29, 2010.

In this opening segment of the interview (approximately 55 mins.), Molissa Fenley describes her family background and childhood in Nigeria, including the physical environment, the place of girls and women in Nigerian culture, and her own education.  She also recalls her travels around the country with her father and her relationship with her mother.  Fenley recounts memories of childhood celebrations in Nigeria and her perceptions, as a child, regarding race.  She remembers dancing at Fela Kuti's club and other ways she experienced life in Nigeria.
