March 21, 2009
On March 21, 2009, as part of the series Mystic Chords of Memory: Abraham Lincoln and the Performing Arts, the Performing Arts Library presented "Emancipations Jubilations: Spirituals and Songs That Led a Nation." The concert, performed by James Martin, baritone, and David O'Steen, pianist, was partly based on songs Lincoln heard at a contraband camp (slaves who had escaped slavery), including "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen," "Every Time I Feel the Spirit," "I Thank God I'm Free at Last," "John Brown's Body," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "Didn't My God Deliver Daniel," and other songs.
