Art and Architecture: Art & Literature: Don Share and Scott Zieher moderated by Arezoo Moseni

A free-wheeling conversation between two lively poets – Don Share the editor of Poetry magazine in Chicago, and Scott Zieher artist/poet and the co-owner of ZieherSmith, a contemporary art gallery in New York City. They explore art and poetry together by discussing critical questions about the relationship between word and image, the crafted and the found, seeing and saying. The discussion is moderated by Arézoo Moseni.

What strikes a reader first encountering Don Share's work is the electric energy of his lines, their contemporary music and movement. Reading Wishbone, Share's third book of poems, is akin to picking up the one clear station still transmitting, the frenetic static of the world replaced by a strong signal broadcast. Share's poems are contrapuntal ripostes to the Babel of the present, a voice not above the noise, but speaking from its midst in a self-possessed language that muscles a new way into meaning. The poems take place in America's backyards and byways, intensive care rooms and airports, haunted by fathers and Fathers, informed by philosophy, the Judeo-Christian tradition, and pop culture.

Don Share is Senior Editor of Poetry magazine. His books include Squandermania (Salt Publishing), Union (Zoo Press), Seneca in English (Penguin Classics), and most recently a new book of poems, Wishbone (Black Sparrow), and Bunting’s Persia (Flood Editions), which explores the British poet Basil Bunting’s time in the Middle East; Share has also edited a critical edition of Bunting’s work for Faber and Faber. His translations of Miguel Hernández, collected in I Have Lots of Heart (Bloodaxe Books) were awarded the Times Literary Supplement Translation Prize, the Premio Valle Inclán, and P.E.N./New England Discovery Award. He has been Poetry Editor of Harvard Review and Partisan Review, Editor of Literary Imagination, and curator of poetry at Harvard University. With Christian Wiman, he co-hosts the monthly Poetry magazine podcast and has co-edited The Open Door: One Hundred Poems, One Hundred Years of Poetry Magazine (University of Chicago Press).

Scott Zieher’s GENTRY (Emergency Press, February 2012) is his third book length poem since 2005. With a skeleton of quotes from the poet’s collection of the entire run of the mid-50’s men’s magazine GENTRY, Zieher fleshes out a portrait of anachronistic New York masculinity via the language and imagery provided by both the magazine’s outmoded bravado and a contemporary flâneur’s approach to the city that never sleeps. With THE PORNOGRAPHERS (Jaded Ibis Press, February 2012, in collaboration with Christopher Grimes) Zieher’s collages coincide and collide with a riveting single-sentence novel, featuring nearly 200 of his original new artworks and serving as a thorough introduction to the poet’s forays in the plastic arts.

Scott Zieher won the 2004 Emergency Press book contest for his book-length poem, VIRGA. His second book-length poem, IMPATIENCE was published by Emergency Press in 2009 and in February 2010, powerHouse Books published BAND OF BIKERS, a widely praised collection of found photographs from 1972 with an essay by the poet. Zieher’s recent written work has appeared in The Believer, Jubilat, KNOCK and The Iowa Review. Born in Waukesha, Wisconsin, he received his MFA in poetry from Columbia University in 1996 and won the 2009 University of Wisconsin at Waukesha Outstanding Alumni Award. He is co-owner of the contemporary art gallery ZieherSmith, established in 2003, with his wife Andrea, representing an international group of emerging artists in all media. They live in Manhattan with their son, Tennessee, and dog, Robert.

Conceived and organized by Arézoo Moseni, Art and Literature series events bring forth pollinations across the literary and visual arts with readings and discussions by acclaimed artists and authors.
