Scope/Contents Note

Collection consists of typescript copies of Jacob Whitman Bailey's letters, 1829-1853, (compiled by Alfred G. Baileyin 1962) largely to friends and family, and relating to personal and family matters. Also included are comments on some of these subjects by Loring Woart Bailey, his son;obituaries, 1857; letters, 1835-1882, by other members of the Bailey and related families; and essays and bibliographies on the Bailey and related Slaughter family of Culpepper, Va., and other families.

Biographical/Historical Note

Jacob Whitman Bailey (1811-1857) was an American botanist,chemist and geologist. He was a cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point, 1828-1882, and taught there from 1834-1857. In 1838 he became the first Professor of Chemistry, Mineralogy and Geology at West Point.
