Scope/Contents Note
Collection consists of papers documenting Adams's public life and some family matters and includes correspondence, manuscripts of addresses, petitions, committee records, and other documents. Correspondence of Adams is with notable figures of the period in America and Europe and with family members. Included with the papers is a significant amount of material, largely correspondence, that is neither addressed to Adams, nor written by him. Five volumes of manuscript copies, 1768-1803, are of Adams's papers; Massachusetts public documents, 1789-1797;and pseudonymous articles submitted to Boston newspapers which probably were written by Adams. Also, two-volume calendar to the Adams papers covering the years 1760 to 1803, made by George D. Curtis in the early 20th century.
Biographical/Historical Note
Samuel Adams (1722-1803) was an American revolutionary andpost-revolutionary era political leader. Adams served as lieutenant-governor of Massachusetts from 1789 to 1793, and was governor from 1794 to 1797.
