Biographical/Historical Note

Roger Wood's first dance photographs, of Ballets Jooss, were taken in July 1944. Wood then continued to photographmany dancers and dance companies as they performed in London and other European cities from 1944-1961; he also photographed London opera and theatrical productions. Hisdance photographs were published in several periodicals (Ballet, Ballet annual, Dance and dancers, Dance magazine,Dance news, Dancing times, Theatre arts) and in three small monographs: The New York City Ballet - in action (Saturn Press, 1953?); The Sadler's Wells Ballet (Saturn Press, 1951); The Theatre Ballet of Sadler's Wells in photographs (Phoenix House, 1952). Wood's London theater photographs have been published in Shakespeare at the Old Vic (various editions, 1954-1958) and A D'Oyly Carte album(two editions, 1953 and 1958).
