Biographical/Historical Note

Founded by Virlana Tkacz in 1990, the Yara Arts Group is aNew York-based theater company dedicated to staging works on Ukrainian themes. Early in its existence the Yara ArtsGroup became a resident company at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in lower Manhattan. The troupe's first production was A LIGHT FROM THE EAST. One of the group's most widely publicized works was an adaptation of Lesya Ukrainka's 1911 play FOREST SONG, which in turn was based on a Ukrainian folk tale about the doomed romance between a wood nymph and a peasant boy. The piece, retitled YARA'SFOREST SONG, was adapted by Tkacz and African-American poet Wanda Phipps, and staged in Kiev and New York in 1994. Other pieces staged by Yara Arts Group include BLINDSIGHT, TIME IN BETWEEN, and WATERFALLS/REFLECTIONS.
