Scope/Contents Note

This is a synthetic collection consisting of manuscripts and typescripts, correspondence from the author, a journalfor 1945 through 1951, and notebooks kept from 1946 to 1947. The manuscripts and typescripts include essays, poems, notes for work, portions of novels and stories, translations, and transcripts by the author of works by Chester Kallman and Diana Dodge Lewars. The correspondence,dating from 1946 to 1953, includes letters from the authorto W. H. Auden, Douglas Bush, Howard Griffin, Theodore Spencer, and others, as well as letters from W. H. Auden and Thomas Mann and others, dating from 1942 through 1953,to the author.
