Scope/Contents Note
The Frederick Jacobi collection contains private recordings made for the composer of his own works, as wellas recordings of his wife performing works by other composers. The recordings frequently feature Jacobi and/or his wife as performers. Included in the collection areperformances of Jacobi's concertos for piano and violoncello, concertino for piano and small orchestra, Twopieces in the Sabbath mood, Ave Rota, Four dances from theProdigal son, Two preludes on traditional melodies, From the prophet Nehemiah, and portions of his second string quartet. Also included is a performance of Ernest Bloch'sSchelomo, arranged for two pianos and cello and featuring Gerald Warburg on cello and Irene and Frederick Jacobi on pianos; a piano concerto by J.C. Bach, and a rondo by Mozart. The last two feature Irene Jacobi on piano.
Biographical/Historical Note
Frederick Jacobi was an American composer, conductor, and educator active in the early twentieth century. Born in 1891, Jacobi studied piano with Paolo Gallico and Rafael Joseffy and composition with Rubin Goldmark and Ernest Bloch. He was assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York from 1913 to 1917. He spent time in thesouthwestern United States where he studied the music of the Pueblo Indians, elements of which he incorporated intohis own compositions. He taught composition at the Juilliard Shool of Music from 1936 to 1950. Jacobi died in 1952.
