Biographical/Historical Note

Alexander Chalmers, Scottish biographer and literary editor. In addition to serving as editor of the Morning Herald and producing various editions of the works of great authors, he published A General Biographical Dictionary in 32 volumes (1812-1817), to which he contributed over 4000 biographical entries.
