Biographical/Historical Note

William Byron, 5th Baron Byron, Lieutenant in the Royal Navy. In 1765 he killed his cousin and neighbor, William Chaworth, in a duel. He was tried for murder, but found guilty only of manslaughter and forced to pay a small fine. He enjoyed the fact that the incident (and others similarly perceived as displays of cruelty) earned him thenickname "the Wicked Lord." He was the great-uncle to LordByron, the poet.
