Invitation to symposium at New York University on the French chanson in the Renaissance, 1974 June 1 ; program of symposium ; draft of letter (in pencil) to Dr. Reese (author unidentified) ; handouts for lectures by Joshua Rifkin, Richard Wexler. Allan Atlas, Martin Picker, and Laurence Bernstein ; notes on lecture by Daniel Heartz (inpencil on 2nd copy of symposium program); program of concluding concert ; suggested restaurants in the area. The first 2 items are printed, and the last 8 except for the pencil notes are reproduced from typescript. Most of the handouts include bibliographical notes and musical examples with texts in French. The concert program includes texts of chansons sung (French only).

Biographical/Historical Note

An American musicologist, teacher, and editor, Gustave Reese (1899-1977) is best known as the author of Music in the Middle Ages (1940) and Music in the Renaissance (1954;rev 1959). His teaching at New York University and other institutions helped to shape the direction of American musicology.
