Scope/Contents Note

The Hugo Weisgall Papers document his professional life from his student days at the Curtis Institute in the 1930sto 1997. It contains scores, libretti, correspondence, subject files, biographical material, writings, financial records, concert posters and photographs. Though devoted almost exclusively to Weisgall's professional activities, a self-contained group of personal letters between family members is located within the collection's correspondence series and individual personal letters occasionally appearin the chronological correspondence and subject files. Nearly half of the collection consists of scores and libretti. Correspondence and subject files, in roughly equal amounts, comprise the bulk of the remainder.

Biographical/Historical Note

Hugo Weisgall was a Moravian-born American composer. Weisgall studied composition and conducting at the Curtis Institute, comparative literature at Johns Hopkins University and took composition lessons from Roger Sessions privately. After several years in Europe, during and following World War II, he returned to the United States and was active in musical organizations in the Baltimore area before shifting most of his activities to New York. There, he joined the faculties of the Jewish Theological Seminary, Queens College and the Juilliard School and was named Associate Director for Education at Lincoln Center. In addition to his teaching, he worked as a conductor and as a composer, his output centering primarily on a dozen operas, a number of which have received full scale productions by the New York City Operaand other companies.
