Scope/Contents Note
The Alexei Haieff papers contain materials from the estateof the composer. Included are his collection of manuscript scores, as well as other working papers and photographs.
Biographical/Historical Note
Alexei Haieff was an American composer of Russian birth. He was born in Russia on August 25 1914. His family first moved to China and then to the United States, where Haieff became a citizen in 1939. He studied at the Juilliard School Jacobi, Rubin Goldmark, and in Cambridge,Mass. studied with Nadia Boulanger in 1938-39 and in 1942.He served as composer-in-residence for the American Academy in Rome (1952-53 and 1958-59), was a visiting professor at SUNY Buffalo (1962, 1964-65), Andrew Mellon Professor at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (1962-63), visiting professor at Brandeis University (1965-66), and was composer-in-residence at University of Utah (1967-70). Thereafter he divded his time between the USA and Italy, finally settling in Rome, where he died on March 1,1994.
