Scope/Contents Note

Printed travel diary, cruise itinerary, and guide written and illustrated by Warren Clifton Shearman for Raymond & Whitcomb Company, Boston, 1928, partially completed in manuscript by a ship passenger. Manuscript entries begin 7 April 1928, sailing from New York on the S.S. Carinthia,ending 5 May 1928, at Naples, Italy. The writer briefly notes the weather, ship's position, daily activities, entertainments, meals, and local sights, as well as the names of people met on board. Landings include Madeira, Morocco, Spain, Gibraltar, Algeria, Sicily, Tunisia, Malta,Yugoslavia, and Italy. Diary pages for the remainder of the cruise, terminating in New York, are blank. Referencesto family members in the diary and a sailing notice in theNew York Times indicate that the writer was either John Bright Stevens (1864-1946), a New York City attorney whosename is stamped on the cover, or his wife, Cornelia Dodge Stevens.
