Scope/Contents Note
Records include office files with correspondence, reports and other materials pertaining to his tenure at the Library. The bulk of the collection consists of subject files covering a wide range of library issues, such as finances, management, fund raising, construction, grant applications, and cooperative efforts. Correspondence, reports and other records also deal with these issues.
Biographical/Historical Note
Richard Watrous Couper (1922- ) was President and ChiefExecutive Officer of the New York Public Library from 1971until 1980. Before joining the Library, he was Acting President of Hamilton College and Deputy Commissioner of Higher Education for New York State. After leaving N.Y.P.L., he assumed the presidency of the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation.
