Scope/Contents Note

The collection consists chiefly of photographs shot or collected for use in the magazine Hit Parade. Most of the photographs are portraits or candid shots of celebrites, artists and performers, including female impersonators. Many of the photographs were taken at clubs and discos including the Red Parrot, Interferon, andthe Union Club in New York City, the Ice Palace on Fire Island, and venues in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Photographers include Bruce Jope, Dominique, Virginia Liberatore, Steve Aucoin, Gene Bagnato, and others. In addition to the photographs, the collection includes original cartoon art work by Peter Jarrette and Joel Resnicoff which appeared in Hit Parade, a few clippings ofarticles by or about Francis Toohey, and an audiocassette of Toohey's interview of Allan Ginsberg.

Biographical/Historical Note

Francis Toohey, with his partner Bruce Jope, was the founder and editor of the magazine Hit Parade. Hit Parade was published in Boston from 1978-1980 and in New York from 1980-1982. Toohey also wrote the popular "Homoside" feature of the magazine. He has also written for After Dark, Esplanade, the Boston Phoenix, Night Fall,Boston Magazine, and other gay and mainstream publications.
