Scope/Contents Note

Memoranda, financial documents, brochures and other materials relating to the establishment and early operations of The New York Public Library Circulation Department. There is information regarding sites for branch libraries constructed with funding from Andrew Carnegie, Circulation Department regulations, staffing anda model school library.

Biographical/Historical Note

Arthur Elmore Bostwick (1860-1942) was Head Librarian of the New York Free Circulating Libraries from 1895-1897. In1901 he was hired by John Shaw Billings, first Director ofThe New York Public Library, to establish NYPL's Circulation Department (renamed the Branch Libraries in 1966). He was Chief of the Circulation Department until 1909 when he left to become head of the St. Louis Public Library.
