Scope/Contents Note
The collection contains professional, personal and family papers documenting Vreeland's life and career. Professional correspondence and related files document her work as fashion editor and museum consultant. Social correspondence reflects her network of prominent friends, acquaintances and business contacts throughout the world. Personal correspondence from Vreeland family members, chiefly from her sons and their families, describes their upbringing, military service, professional careers and other activities. Letters from her son Thomas describe histraining as a paratrooper at Fort Benning, GA during WorldWar II, and letters from her son Frederick and his wife describe their activities during his Foreign Service postings in the 1950s-1980s. Letters from Vreeland's grandchildren during the 1980s describe their work in Sudan with Save the Children Fund UK and personal interestin Tibetan Buddhism. The papers also contain Vreeland's appointment books, address books, a photographic inventoryof her jewelry, housebooks, scrapbooks, vital records, awards, and other memorabilia. Her writings are represented by drafts and mock-ups of Allure and drafts, galley proofs and reviews of D.V. Family papers include correspondence, appointment books, notebooks, a scrapbook and miscellaneous papers belonging to Thomas Reed Vreeland,Sr., Thomas Reed Vreeland, Jr., and other relatives.
Biographical/Historical Note
Diana Dalziel Vreeland (1903-1989), fashion editor of Harper's Bazaar from 1937 to 1962 and editor-in-chief of Vogue from 1962 to 1971, was a dominant force in the fashion industry of the mid-twentieth century. Followingher editorial career, she was a consultant to the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Vreeland's writings include Allure, co-authored with Christopher Hemphill, and her autobiography, D.V.
