Scope/Contents Note

Records consist almost exclusively of correspondence concerning library matters and the role of the Library during World War II. General correspondence (primarily T to Z) topics include gifts to the Library, reference questions and complaints. Some correspondence from the previous Direcor, Harry M. Lydenberg, for 1940-1941 is in this series. Most of the subject correspondence concerns air raid and civil defense measures taken within the Library as well as throughout New York City during the waryears. World War II correspondence consists of letters, handwritten, typed and duplicated V-mail, to and from Library staff and military personnel in the U.S. and overseas, illustrating the nature of military life. There are photographs of many of these correspondents in the NewYork Public Library Visual Materials collection. The bulk of Hopper correspondence is included in the collection of Director's Office general correspondence, 1934-1954.

Biographical/Historical Note

Franklin F. Hopper was Director of The New York Public Library from 1941-1946.Prior to that he had served as Chief of the Circulation Department and Chief of the OrderDivision.
