Scope/Contents Note

Collection consists of Whitman's correspondence, writings,legal papers, photographs, and printed matter. Includes memoranda and letters about his obituaries; drafts and published copies of his articles, interviews, obituaries and book reviews; photographs with interviewees; early writings for other newspapers; pseudonymous writings underthe name "Stephen Peabody"; books; and articles from The New York Times, 1968-1976. One third of the collection consists of legal papers, correspondence and some press clippings related to Whitman's refusal to answer questionsin U.S. Senate hearings in 1955 about early Communist Party activities, his subsequent trial, appeals and Supreme Court petition.

Biographical/Historical Note

Alden Whitman (1913-1990), an American journalist and author, was best known for his work as chief obituary writer for The New York Times.
