Scope/Contents Note

Collection consists of correspondence, book lists, reports,newsclippings, and other papers pertaining mainly to Vattemare's interest in international library exchange andthe formation of public libraries. Correspondence, 1817-1889, is with academic institutions, museums, libraries, government agencies, officials, and friends in the U.S. and Europe and concerns Vattemare's system of international exchange between libraries. Also, lists of books and documents, reports to and by Vattemare, exhibition registers, and scrapbook of clippings regardinginternational library exchange.

Biographical/Historical Note

Alexandre Vattemare (1796-1864) was a French ventriloquist,impersonator and library founder. After a successful career as an entertainer, he devoted his fortune and time to the formation of a system of international library exchange of books, documents and other materials. He was active in the creation of public libraries and was a founder of the Boston Public Library.
