Scope/Contents Note

Collection consists of Turcotte's writings, sketches, photographs, and videocassette produced by Turcotte. Turcotte's writings, 1969-1992, include poetry, fiction and journals, some illustrated with sketches. Also, sketchbooks, 1975-1986, by Turcotte; photographs; and videocassette he produced at Gay Men's Health Crisis in 1991 containing poetry readings and commentary by writers with AIDS.

Biographical/Historical Note

James Turcotte (1945-1993) was an American art gallery owner and tax advisor who began writing in the late 1960s. At first he wrote fiction and free verse reflecting his experiences as a gay man, father, drug user, and resident of Los Angeles and New York. After being diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, his writings were primarily poetic and journalistic observations of his life.
