Scope/Contents Note

Papers reflect Mr. Strong's personal life, his career as awriter documenting gay culture, and his collection of his family's World War II papers. Included are correspondence,writings, audio cassettes, a video cassette and a 78 rpm paper sound recording. About 50% of the collection consists of Mr. Strong's writings, including research materials, interview notes, drafts, final versions, relevant correspondence and mint condition copies of publications in which his writings have appeared. About 10% of the collection is comprised of audio cassette tapesof interviews Strong's articles. Another 10% consists of papers pertaining to the experiences of Mr. Strong's father, Dale Strong, in the military during World War II. The remainder of the collection includes personal and professional correspondence, school papers.

Biographical/Historical Note

Author and editor noted for essays, criticism and oral histories focusing on gay culture and the arts. Lester Q. Strong was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on August 3,1946. He was educated at St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the New School for Social Research in New York. Strong worked as an editor from 1969-1979 while establishing his writing career. Two of his early articleswere collected and published as The Past in the Present: Two Essays on History and Myth in Vardis Fisher's Testament of Man (1979). From 1982 to 1987, Strong conducted interviews for the Senior Action in a Gay Environment (SAGE) Oral History Project. His essays, criticism and interviews have appeared in such publications as Metroline, Out! Magazine, St. John's Review and Southern Voice. Beginning in 1994, Strong's GayArts Beat column appeared in publications across the United States.
