Scope/Contents Notes

Collection consists of office files, which constitute the core of the administrative records of the corporation, plus contracts, minutes, press releases and clippings, photographs, phonotapes, phonograph recordings, and films. General files contain correspondence, memoranda and other records reflecting the activities of principal officers and departments involved in the administration, construction, maintenance, and promotion of the Fair and to the participation of public and private exhibitors including numerous foreign governments. Engineering files consist of records of the director of engineering and chief engineer concerning the construction and demolition of the Fair and include correspondence, memoranda, technical plans and drawings, progress reports, contracts,and invoices. Permit Office materials consist of correspondence, applications, permits, photographs, and architectural plans and drawings. Import Clearance Dept. records include correspondence and other papers related tothe importation of exhibitors' goods. Secretary's files consist of minutes, 1959-1968, of the board of directors; minutes, 1959-1971, of meetings of members, directors and the executive committee; agendas; correspondence; and deskdiaries. Labor Relations Counsel files contain correspondence, 1961-1966, with officials of trade unions,exhibitors, contractors, and concessionaires; minutes; memoranda; and contracts between exhibitors/concessionaires and labor unions.

Also, press clippings; records of the Medical Dept. including emergency case records; photographs (prints and some negatives) of buildings and exhibits, special events,staff, etc.; Comptroller's Division records; printed matter (mainly Fair publications); visitors' registers. The audiovisual materials include sound recordings of ground breaking and dedication ceremonies for Fair sites, press conferences, speeches by Fair officials, musical performances, and Board of Directors meetings; and motion pictures produced to promote the Fair or to document the progress of its construction, television productions aboutthe Fair, press conferences, and outtakes from these productions.

Biographical/Historical Note

The New York World's Fair of 1964-1965 was held at Flushing Meadows in the Borough of Queens on a site leasedfrom the City of New York. It was conceived in 1958 by a group of New Yorkers who formed a non-profit corporation of some 300 members to provide the start-up capital. Eighty nations participated in the Fair which had the theme 'Man's Achievements in an Expanding Universe'. Robert Moses, who was associated with the earlier World's Fair in New York in 1939-1940, served as the president of the 1964-1965 Fair.
