Scope/Contents Note

Collection consists of the records of Gordon L. Ford as business manager of the New York Tribune from 1873 to 1881. Bulk of the collection is correspondence, 1867-1880,from readers ordering subscriptions and publications. Other correspondence includes promotional letters, editorial correspondence, and letters among Tribune staff concerning business, editorial and personal matters. Also,financial and legal records, minutes, notes, memoranda, ephemera, and printed matter.

Biographical/Historical Note

The New York Tribune was founded in 1841 by Horace Greeley,who served as its editor until 1872. Whitelaw Reid was editor from 1872 until 1905. In 1924 the Tribune merged with the New York Herald to form the New York Herald Tribune.
