Scope/Contents Note

Collection contains correspondence, writings, research notes, personal miscellany, printed matter, sound recordings, home movies, and samples of Katz's textile designs on cloth and paper. Almost half of the papers consists of typescript drafts (with collateral papers) of his published historical documentaries including his book,The Invention of Heterosexuality (1995); and miscellaneousessays, lectures, reviews and other writings. Also, correspondence with historians, scholars, publishers, gay and lesbian rights advocates, and Katz family members. Remainder of the papers includes topical file of personal miscellany, research notes, papers relating to grant proposals and to the teaching of gay history, textile designs, printed matter, audiotapes of interviews with participants in the movement for gay and lesbian rights, and motion picture films relating to Katz and his family during his youth.

Biographical/Historical Note

Jonathan Ned Katz (1938- ), author, playwright, historian,teacher, gay rights advocate, and textile designer, is a leading authority on homosexuality and gay and lesbian history. During the 1960s Katz worked in New York City asa free-lance textile designer. His writing career began inthe late 1960s with the production of his plays about fugitive slaves and the publication of studies in black history. He became a founding member of the Gay Academic Union; wrote books, articles, reviews, and essays on gay and lesbian issues; and lectured and taught courses on gayand lesbian history.
