Scope/Contents Note

The Maryam Jameelah papers include correspondence, fictionand academic writings, artwork, photographs and video recordings reflecting her search for identity in her youth,her conversion to Islam, her emigration to Pakistan and her life there, and her interest in Palestinian life and literature. Published and unpublished correspondence include Jameelah's letters to her parents and family members, and letters to and from her mentor Syed Abul 'AlaMaudoodi. Writings include manuscript and typescript versions of Ahmad Khalil, her novel about a Palestinian refugee family, and non-fiction works, including articles,bibliographies and book reviews. Also present are Jameelah's illustrations for Ahmad Khalil and other artwork; video recordings of an interview with Jameelah and a family visit to the United States; and family photographs.

Biographical/Historical Note

Maryam Jameelah, born Margaret Marcus in 1934, is an American convert from Judaism to Islam and the author of many works on Islamic history and culture. Jameelah was born and raised in Westchester County, New York and converted to Islam prior to her emigration to Pakistan in 1962, where she subsequently married Mohammad Yusuf Khan.
